Beyond the Ears: How Untreated Hearing Loss Quietly Impacts Overall Health

The inner ear is an extremely delicate, highly vascularised organ. The cochlea’s tiny sensory hair cells (stereocilia) depend entirely on a rich, unobstructed supply of oxygen and blood flow to survive.

Because these micro-vessels are so sensitive, changes in cardiovascular health often manifest in the auditory system before other systemic symptoms appear. Research has repeatedly demonstrated strong correlations between low-frequency hearing loss and underlying cardiovascular conditions, including:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Atherosclerosis (narrowing of arterial walls)

  • Peripheral artery disease

A sudden or disproportionate change in hearing ability can occasionally serve as an early clinical indicator of systemic circulatory changes that warrant broader medical review.
